Perché un concorso per violoncello a Lucca intitolato a Luigi Boccherini?
L’accostamento con il nome del più celebre violoncellista lucchese alla città che gli ha dato i natali è evidente e ricordarlo con un concorso nel 2023, celebrando così i 280 anni dalla sua nascita, è per il Conservatorio che da lui prende il nome un doveroso omaggio. Il concorso è l’occasione per riaffermare l’importanza della figura di Boccherini e vuole imporsi come manifestazione di respiro internazionale, offrendo ai musicisti la concreta possibilità di aspirare al gradino più̀ alto della disciplina musicale: il ruolo solista.
Why a Cello Competition in Lucca named after Luigi Boccherini?
The association between the name of Lucca’s most famous cellist and his city of birth is quite evident and honouring it with a Competition in 2023, thus celebrating the 280th anniversary of the musician and composer’s birth, would be a great goal for us and a fitting tribute. The new Competition represents an important occasion to reaffirm the importance of the figure of Luigi Boccherini and wants to establish itself as an event of international importance and prestige, with the aim of giving musicians a real chance to aspire to the highest achievement of the classical musical discipline: the soloist role.

Un brano della durata minima di 7 minuti fino a un massimo di 10 minuti scelto dal concorrente.
Il brano può essere per violoncello solo o per violoncello e pianoforte e può essere un brano inedito, anche composto dal concorrente stesso.
Brano inedito, consegnato ai candidati un mese prima dell’inizio del concorso composto dal M° Giovanni Sollima (senza obbligo di esecuzione a memoria).

Sergei Prokofiev, Sonata in C major Op. 119
A work with a minimum duration of 7 minutes up to a maximum duration of 10 minutes, selected by the contestant.
The work can be for solo cello or for cello and piano and can be an unpublished piece or a work composed by the competitor.
Unpublished work, provided to the candidates 1 (one) month before the start of the Competition composed by Maestro Giovanni Sollima (does not need to be played from memory).

- Performance of a Suite by J.S. Bach selected from the 6 Suites for solo cello (the suite can also be selected from those presented for the online pre-selection).
- A virtuoso work for solo cello or with piano accompaniment.

- L. Boccherini: esecuzione del I tempo dal Concerto n. 9 in si bemolle maggiore G 482 (ammessa solo la versione originale)
- Uno dei seguenti concerti per violoncello e orchestra (a scelta del candidato):

La prima e la seconda prova si tengono nella chiesa di San Francesco a Lucca (piazza San Francesco), davanti alla tomba di Luigi Boccherini che lì riposa. La terza prova si tiene al Teatro del Giglio di Lucca (piazza del Giglio).
The first and second rounds will be held in the Church of San Francesco in Lucca (Piazza San Francesco), in front of the tomb of Luigi Boccherini. The third round will be held at the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca (Piazza del Giglio).
No, non sono previste eccezioni. Si potrà iscrivere solo chi alla data di scadenza del bando (10 di luglio 2023) ha compiuto il quindicesimo anno di età (età minima) e alla stessa data non aver superato il trentacinquesimo anno di età (età massima).
No, there are no exceptions. Only those who have turned 15 (minimum age) on or before the application deadline date (July 10, 2023) and on the same date have not yet turned 35 years of age (maximum age) may apply for the competition.

Yes, hospitality costs for accompanying individuals, including pianists, must be fully covered by the competitor.
I risultati sono comunicati entro il 20 di luglio 2023.
The results will be published by July 20, 2023.
Il concorrente ammesso e l’eventuale pianista accompagnatore che abbiano necessità di ottenere il visto per entrare in Italia, dovranno indicarlo sul modulo di iscrizione. La Segreteria del Concorso provvederà ad inviare una lettera di invito. Le procedure e le relative spese per l’ottenimento del visto saranno a carico del concorrente e dell’eventuale accompagnatore. In ogni caso, la Segreteria del Concorso non è responsabile del mancato ottenimento del visto.
Admitted competitors and any accompanying pianists who need to obtain a Visa to enter Italy, must indicate it on the registration form. The Competition Secretariat will send an invitation letter for the Visas process. The procedures and related costs for obtaining the Visa will be borne by the competitors and any accompanying individuals. The Competition Secretariat will assume no responsibility for declined Visas.
Il Concorso metterà a disposizione dei candidati alcuni pianisti accompagnatori, i quali saranno gratuitamente a disposizione dei concorrenti durante il Concorso. A ciascun candidato sarà garantita una sessione di prova prima dell’esecuzione in concorso.
I concorrenti potranno comunque decidere di avvalersi – sostenendone tutte le spese – del proprio pianista accompagnatore.
The Competition will provide accompanying pianists for competitors, who will be available free of charge during the Competition.
Each candidate will be guaranteed a practice session before performing in the competition. Competitors may, in any case, decide to make use of their own accompanying pianist – bearing all the related costs.
